Clifty Falls State Park (part 2)

Oops... I forgot I hadn't put the "part two" of this post up yet. lol. My bad.

Anyways, friends and neighbors, my wife, friend and I took a little trip to Madison, Indiana to see the sights of Clifty Falls State Park several weeks ago. Before sure to check out the first part of this two-part post, just in case you feel "out of the loop", so to speak. :-)

And if you want to learn more about the areas where the photographs were taken, be sure to click the link above.

Clifty Falls features a park rife with waterfalls, trails to hike and absolutely beautiful scenery. The following are shots of scenes we enjoyed at lookout points during our travel in this substantially sized park. My wife, my friend and I spent a relaxing, yet fun filled day while here.

Above, is something you'll see right away when venturing into the Clifty Inn.

Friend, standing next to the outside of the Clifty Inn and Falls Restaurant.

Below, you'll find pictures of the Ohio River and the town of Madison.

Above, you can see Steve taking a picture of me while I'm taking a picture of him taking a picture of me while I'm taking a... lol.

Whatever you do, don't play on this old boat! Heh heh. There's history to this boat and you can read about it to the right of where it says, "Please Do Not Play on Boat." Enlarge picture to read. Or not. :-)

Clifty Falls and the nearby Ohio River are products of the Ice Age. The Ohio River is a trench cut by sand and gravel laden melt waters of the glacial ice mass and basically marks the southern most advance of the glaciers which came from the north. Clifty Falls and its canyon are a subsequent erosion feature. From the lip of Clifty Falls at an elevation near the general level of the county, Clifty Creek plunges down more than 70 feet. In nearly three miles of canyon, the creek descends another 250 feet to the Ohio River below. There are four major waterfalls and numerous minor ones in the park.

Clifty Falls State Park (part 1)

I took so many great pictures during our trip to Clifty Falls State Park over the weekend, I have to split them up into two posts.

A Little Flooding

Our small towns along the Ohio river are being flooded just a wee bit. The flood levels aren't enough to complain about, especially in comparison to other parts of the world, like Japan and Australia, of course. But the shots my friend, Steve, and I took from our cameras were kinda cool, I thought.

This is a small park that my wife and I go to for picnics and boat watching during the summer and fall months. There's quite a few wooden shelters to sit under. I wouldn't try that now, though. I think, just think... I might get wet.

Now here's a picture that contrasts the one before it, quite nicely. The picture below, taken during a cold winter's day, is of the exact same location as the picture above. Pretty neat.

The buildings below were shut down due to flooding. You can't see the highway, at all, in this shot.

The Ohio river has decided the road will end and it's up to you to try to find another way around.

I'm wondering what the guy in the truck is thinking... or is he thinking?

Barge... River... Meet house.

Something tells me no one's going to be playing football in the field today. Just a hunch.

Walking Along The Ohio River and Lesko Park

We spent part of our day walking along the Ohio River in Lesko Park. It was still snowing. It was cold. And it was fun.

We had our first substantial snowfall late this year. I was going to say the first substantial snowfall of the Winter season and then I realized it's not officially winter yet. Around my neck of the woods, however, if you have entered into the month of December, it's unofficially winter here due to the cold, snowy weather we get in this area, normally.

I would say we got around three to four inches of snow. Ordinarily, people panic when it first snows around here. Not today. Everyone seemed to enjoy it- which was nice.

For a hundred years, more or less, you could take a ferry across the river to the other side- which would be the state of Kentucky. About a decade or so ago, the ferry stopped it's run. I have fond memories of those river rides.

Uh-Oh... Looks like there be a monster lurking about in the waters today, Matey.

My wife, doing her best turtle impersonation. She was agreeable... and crazy enough to go for a frigid afternoon walk along the river with me today. She'll later kill me for taking this picture of her and posting it on this blog. So... so long, folks! See ya on the other side!

Each lamppost has a little sign, hanging off to the side, saying who contributed money to put toward the creation of the park and it's future improvements.

Some people come down here to fish during the spring and summer months.

I welcome all of you to come jump in the river for a swim. It's a "balmy" 0 degrees Celsius and 32 degrees Fahrenheit outside today.

Don't worry about your safety. I'll be there to take a few choice pics of you while you enjoy your swim. Tee hee.

Facts you may not know about the Ohio River: The Ohio River is 981 miles (1582 km) long, starting at the confluence of the Allegheny and the Monongahela Rivers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and ending in Cairo, Illinois, where it flows into the Mississippi River.

The Ohio River flows through or borders six states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

The Ohio River is a source of drinking water for more than three million people.

Approximately 150 species of fish have been collected from the Ohio River.

I Haven't The Foggiest Idea

These are shots I took of different areas around where I live. It was around 35 degrees Fahrenheit and foggy as heck. I knew it would be a good picture shooting opportunity, so off I went in the truck, with camera. These were taken about 8 or 9 o' clock in the morning. The fog stuck around until early afternoon.
